Sunday: the day of the week that changes everything.
Back in 1960, when Etta James sang about a Sunday kind of love, I know she was talking about human emotions. I also know that Etta had no way of knowing how I would receive that song in the year 2020, but here we are and Sunday is the day of the week that changes everything.
I do want a Sunday kind of love, a love that lasts past all else, a love that’s “on the square” righteous and open. I want to hope and plan (Etta said dream and scheme) “every minute, every hour, every day” looking for my Redeemer who will hold me safely and warmly when my days feel lonely and cold.
In my world, I think of each Sunday as Jesus Day. Sundays are about worship and rest. Sundays are for celebrations of a Resurrected and Living Savior and for peace in my soul. Whether she intended it or not, the Queen of Soul could not have touched me more than when singing about her Sunday Kind of Love.
After the resurrection of Jesus, the followers of Peter were encouraged by a renewing of their hearts, and they were pressed to share that awakening through the way they loved one another. “Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.” (1 Peter 1:22-23, NRSV)
On this day, this Sunday, the day of the week that changes everything, may I cast aside doubt and be renewed and uplifted, ready to offer my undying love to Jesus and others.
Loving Sundays,
Pastor Beth
